Unmarked Mug of Historic Interest
Measures 4 11/16" high x 5" in width. Good condition. Good weight. Engraved on front "The West Church in Lynd Street". Bottom is numbered 'IX' (or) 'XI'. A pair of matching Mugs is in Museum of Fine Arts-Boston (no's III & VII). Mug numbered 'VI' is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The West Church in Boston was founded in 1737. It's first minister was William Hooper. In 1747, Jonathan Mayhew replaced Hooper. Mayhew was an outspoken advocate of American liberties in the evolving conflict with England. Among Mayhew's intimate friends were John & Samuel Adams, and John Hancock. Paul Revere, on occasion, attended his church. Construction details have thus far precluded determining the maker.
